Cookies and Cash
During the holidays the club presents gifts of “cookies and cash” (dollar amounts vary with available club funds -typically $100 per family) to local families that have been identified as needing some special assistance. Activities includes club members going out in a team, no less than two, to visit an identified family and presenting them with a gift of holiday cheer and good wishes from the West Bloomfield Optimist Club. This is a very special activity that is very meaningful to all who participate.
This event focuses on underprivileged families and kids whom may otherwise not receive gifts during the December holiday season. Gifts are given to children of all ages ranging from elementary to senior high schools.
This activity is part of a nationwide Optimist International (OI) activity where children participate in an oratorical contest. A speech topic is provided from OI, children who sign up to participate are provided details about the contest, it’s rules, directions, requirements, etc. The club holds a local contest to select various top performers who are then eligible to move on in our region, county, state, nation for scholarship awards. This activity needs assistance in coordinating participants, the contest activity, contest judges, arranging for awards, etc.

Trick or Treat Trail
This event is in support of West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Trick or Treat Trail event at Marshbank Park. Our club is represented at this event where club members hand out candy to “trick or treaters” from the community as they walk about the park. Candy is handed out by various event sponsors all working together to make the event a success. Event includes coordination of volunteers, candy acquisition and handing out club info.
This event is where the club installs its incoming President, Board and recognizes its past President and board members for all of their efforts. This event is typically chaired by the past president who needs assistance with a strong committee and volunteer group. Activities include planning, coordinating, invitations, scheduling, reservations, dinner planning, etc.
The Optimist Club of West Bloomfield partners with West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation to provide for and sell concessions during the popular concerts in the park series each summer. This activity includes coordinating dates, volunteers, supplies, health department licensure (we cook hot dogs and hamburgers), event funds, coordinating with parks, etc. This is a significant hands on event and takes many helping hands to make successful. Many are encouraged to sign up to help for this activity!
