The winner of our annual Essay Contest is awarded a generous Honor Scholarship, presented at the Greater West Bloomfield Michigan Week Awards Breakfast. Club winners advance to the District competition, and strive for a $2,500 college scholarship. District-level scholarships are funded by the Optimist International Foundations (including West Bloomfield Optimist Club Foundation, Inc.).
Our "Be Like Bob" Scholarship is awarded to exemplary high school seniors who will pursue higher education within the state of Michigan the following academic year. This scholarship recognizes youth who display 1) commitment to enriching our community, 2) outstanding achievements, and 3) ambitious goals. This scholarship remembers past-WB Optimist President Bob Mellen, a cherished friend who embodied goodwill and optimism. "Be Like Bob” Scholarship awardees are also recognized at the annual Michigan Week Breakfast.
The West Bloomfield Optimist Club supports youth program initiatives on a case-by-case basis. Past examples include the West Bloomfield STEAM Club, Abbott Middle School Theatre Program, and First Responder Appreciation.
